Our Story

Gen OffGrid was established in 2017 in order to address the market need for replacing the one billion litres of diesel consumed each year for remote power generation.

We are specialist solar & battery system engineers, designers and installers. Providing engineered solar, lithium and diesel solutions supporting those living and working in the harshest conditions across Northern Australia and our neighbours to the North.

Gen OffGrid have facilities in Broome, Darwin, Kununurra, Karratha and PNG. With full in-house expertise that comprises:

  • Design & Engineering

  • Manufacturing & Installation

  • Servicing, Operations & Maintenance

The team at GenOffGrid has proven experience in delivering commercial and utility-scale solar PV and lithium battery integration on a megawatt scale.

John Davidson established Gen OffGrid in 2017. This followed the acquisition of EMC by ASX listed Carnegie Clean Energy. EMC introduced many ‘first of class’ remote energy solutions between 2004 - 2016.

Gen OffGrid’s workshop facilities

In 2021 the business obtained its third-party ISO accreditation for its OHS, Environmental, and Quality Management Systems.

These commitments and standards are upheld across all our regions of operations.

Gen OffGrid’s strategy is to have a real local presence within the regions we operate.

  • This means all our teams are locally employed, offering career paths into the renewable energy industry.

  • We procure within our local business communities. From our trusses to electrical supplies, logistics and PPE.

  • We take an active role in our community organisations and supporting events.

As a regional operator, Gen OffGrid recognises the difference it can make in closing the gap with Indigenous Australians.

  • Offering a pathway to employment, that enables them to stay regional. The majority of our apprentices are Indigenous.

  • In the Kimberley we have a joint venture with leading building and construction group H&M Tracey. In the Alice Springs region we work closely with Dynamic Solutions NT to enable training and employment pathways for local youth. Both of these business are long-term trusted local Indigenous businesses.

  • We purposely support other local and Indigenous businesses in the areas we operate, and example is Kimberley Manufacturing Pty Ltd (KMPL) who assist with the direct build and supply of our high quality trusses - which to date have seen procurement levels in excess of $500,000. Now that’s good job creation and investment into our communities that we’re proud of.

We collaborate with other local organisations

Gen OffGrid and its team members are active members of its local business and industry organisations. This includes working with the respective Chambers of Commerce in Broome, Karratha, Northern Territory and the East Kimberley.   We support the Kimberley Pilbara Cattleman’s Association, Northern Territory Cattleman’s Association, and Central Station - an online community engagement and support platform for people in north Australian beef industry. We’re members of Territory Proud and the Energy Club NT, and also part of a coalition of organisations called Energy Transformation Association for the Kimberley, focused on securing cost efficient energy for the region.
